Don’t Rely on Luck in the New Year

A new year always feels like a fresh start and 2024 is no different. As we look ahead toward the next 12 months, we want to remind you that even as the business ebbs and flows, one thing remains the same: Safety is our #1 priority, and we will continue to drive unacceptable risk out of our operations.

January is a perfect time to take stock and consider what’s working well in your department, what needs updating and what new strategies can be put in place to ensure our colleagues are being properly taken care of.

Here are a few practical pledges that everyone can make that will enhance our health and safety culture and performance in 2024:

• Keep the workplace neat and organized (5S) – we know that a clean shop is a safe shop!

• Get better at reporting and acting on near-misses.

• Take a closer look at the way we do work. Focus on those activities with a high risk of serious injury (Critical risks).

• Talk to each other about what can be done to improve safety – everyone’s engagement is vital.

Our safety, and that of our colleagues, is intentional. It’s reporting hazards long before they become incidents. It’s doing our jobs the right way, even if a shortcut is tempting. It’s looking out for each other and pointing out when something isn’t right.

Let’s make keeping each other safe our most important resolution in 2024.
